Telford College of Arts and Technology

LOCATION Telford College is located in Wellington the heart of Telford. Telford College of Arts and Technology is the only large general further education college in the Telford and Wrekin area. It operates from a single campus in Wellington in the new town of Telford but provides much of its provision in the community and on employers’ premises. Most of the provision is vocational education and training. The college mission is “Where great futures begin and every learner matters”.

The college is an excellent centre of communication only minutes from the M54 and the link with the M6, main line rail connections are less than five minutes away all this makes for an easily accessible and attractive site. 

THE LOCAL AREA Wellington and immediate area possess a vast social history, known best for a being market town it is at the heart of the new town of Telford with easy access to major motorways (M54) and the main shopping centre. The Ironbridge Gorge a World Heritage site borders the college boundaries, a hub for Telford and Shropshire tourism. Within 5 miles is Much Wenlock known as the home of the modern day Olympics, the village giving its name to one of the 2012 official mascots.

Wellington has many secondary schools all within a 5 mile radius of the college and immediately opposite across the road AFC Telford United Football Club.

STUDENT DEMOGRAPHIC Telford and Wrekin has a diverse population with residents from a number of different ethnic backgrounds, national identities and countries of birth. The Borough has become more diverse over the last ten years with an increase in BME populations.

Around one in ten (10.5%) of Telford and Wrekin’s population is from a non White British (English/Welsh/Scottish/Northern Irish/British) background with 7.3% of the population from a non White background (2011 census). The College has positive recruitment and effective curriculum offers for minority groups with 9% of campus and Telford community from non-white backgrounds. The college also has 5% of campus and community learners from ‘other white background’. This is mainly reflected in the number of European learners recruited. Telford and Wrekin has a higher proportion of White British residents than regionally or nationally with resulting lower proportions of BME groups. The exception to this is the ‘Other White’ category where there is a higher proportion of residents in Telford and Wrekin than regionally, but still lower than the national picture. FACILITIES The Sport TCAT complex is a world class facility which caters for a large and diverse range of sports. As well as accommodating the day to day curricular delivery to the college students it also functions as a venue to support numerous community led schemes and initiatives as well as playing home to many local, regional and national sides as a playing and training venue. The facility was named in the London 2012 handbook as an earmarked training establishment with particular emphasis on Football, Basketball and Badminton.

The state of the art facilities include a dance and aerobics studio, fully equipped fitness suite, double sized sports hall containing six badminton courts, two basketball/netball training courts and one central main basketball/netball show court. This main arena is flanked by 400 retractable bleacher seats. Attached to the main sport shall is the hugely impressive Superdome that hosts a 3G indoor football pitch. Adjacent to The Superdome is the new Full size 3G outside football/Rugby pitch with flood lights. Extensive changing facilities are finished off with outdoor grass pitches laid to football and rugby specifications.

OUR CAMPUS Telford College was established originally over 100 years ago and has a national reputation for providing a first-rate service with quality education and training.Through the enthusiasm, commitment and dedication of the staff, the College has thrived as a local resource providing for all sectors of the community.

COURSE WE OFFER TCAT has provision in 14 Sector Subject Areas; the largest of which by volume are engineering and manufacturing technologies, retail and commercial enterprise, and preparation for life and work. The school of Sport currently houses 258 students ranging from Foundation level to HND provision at level 5/6 course of study. A vibrant part time sports provision sees some  20 courses that offer the opportunity for students to build up bespoke personal portfolios within the sport and leisure industry.
